First circular for PST05

The XI-th Workshop on Polarized Sources and Targets will be held on November 14-17, 2005 at the University of Tokyo, Japan. The workshop will be co-hosted by RIKEN and the Center for Nuclear Study , the University of Tokyo. About 70 scientists from different institutes are expected to participate.

The workshop is a traditional one to discuss physics and technologies related to the polarized gas/solid targets, polarized electron/ion/neutron sources, and polarimetry. Main technologies to polarize nuclei are commonly used for different applications. For example, irradiation of polarized photon from laser diodes can be used to produce polarized proton/deuteron/electron beams, and to polarize 3He and Xe nuclei. It will clearly provide a good opportunity for scientists in the related fields to exchange ideas and information on the recent progresses of adjacent fields. For the above purpose, the workshop program will be organized from the view point of the technical methods, but not of applications, as listed below.

  1. Atomic Beam Method
    • polarized proton/deuteron ion source/gas target
    • polarization of unstable nuclei
    • other topics
  2. Optical Pumping Method and Laser Techniques
    • polarized proton/deuteron ion source/gas target
    • polarization of 3He, Li and heavy ions including unstable nuclei
    • polarized electron source
    • polarization of unstable nuclei
    • applications polarization measurement in nuclear/particle physics magnetic resonance imaging with polarized 3He/Xe fundamental symmetry
    • other topics
  3. NMR/ESR Method
    • transfer of electron polarization to nuclear polarization
    • polarization measurement
    • control of polarization direction
    • other topics
  4. Nuclear Reaction Method
    • polarization measurement
    • production of polarized neutron / unstable nuclear beams
    • other topics
  5. Cryogenic Technique
    • DNP polarized solid target
    • other topics
  6. Other Techniques

The Workshop will be held in the Yayoi Auditorium Ichijo Hall, the Yayoi campus (next to the Hongo campus) of the University of Tokyo, Japan. The Ichijo Hall was constructed in 2000 to celebrate the 125th-years anniversary of establishment of the Department of Agriculture. The hall employs various wooden materials for energy-saving and harmony with environment. Around the campus, you can enjoy a real Japanese atmosphere and tradition. The invited talks and contributed talks will be presented in the plenary session. Contributions to poster presentations are also welcome. The second circular containing information about the scientific and social programs, instructions for submitting contributed papers, as well as detail informations of hotel and travel, will be distributed in March 2005.
