Access to CNS in RIKEN Wako Campus

Center for Nuclear Study (CNS) belongs to School of Science, the University of Tokyo, but the main building is located in the campus of RIKEN in Wako, Saitama.

Entrance registration

(New scheme from Sep. 1, 2026)

External people should enter from the west gate, with a valid registration. Participants of experiments are requested to provide the information (staying period, expected arrival time, phone number etc.) to the local staff (H. Yamaguchi/A. Kotaka) by a week before arrival, and the registration is made by them accordingly.

However, if the registration is not completed or you cannot find your RIKEN entrance card, visitors may have to make an online registration by themselves using this: Visitor Registration System

For CNS visitors, CNS staff (secretaries+professors) will recieve the request and one of them must approve it. After approval, an email with a QR code will be sent to the visitor, which should be presented at the west gate guard station. The temporary card given at the west gate is only daily-basis one, and should be returned to them within the day.

Notes:

-It seems there is no English version available. RIKEN recommends us to use online translation on the browser.

-Please fill in the 承認者メールアドレス (email address of the approver) as riken-nyukou＠cns.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp so that the CNS staff can approve your request.

-As for the "Date and time of exit", If you set it on the final day of your stay, you can use the same QR code for multiple days all during your stay.

Entrance cards/key-locked buildings

Most of the buildings in RIKEN are locked, and you need an entrance card to enter/exit those buildings. The temporary entrance card issued at the west gate of RIKEN also works as the key.

If you have completed the registration of the external user as described above, your personal card will be kept at the secretary's room, on the 2F of the CNS building. We usually put your card in a can in Yamaguchi's postbox (located in the copy machine room also on the 2F, in front of the secretary's room) by your arrival. For some cases, the card could be at the RIBF Users Office (for newcomers or when the card is remade) or the secretary room of Nishina Center (when you have a visiting position at RIKEN). We will let you know in such cases.

The entrance door of the CNS building is locked at night (19:00-) on weekdays and all the time on weekends and holidays. You need to input a number to unlock the door. (Please ask a CNS member for the key number. It's changed during the COVID period, and the old number does not work.)

There is an electric-lock gate between the Sakura House and Nishina Lodge, and some of the temporary cards do not work for that gate. If you will be staying at Sakura House but the card does not work for the door, please go to the west gate and come to Sakura House from the road outside, or get your personal card, which should work for all the gates (never climb on the fence).

Please do not fail to return your entrance card to the original place you received it, CNS building, RIBF users office, secretary's room in RIKEN Nishina Center (for personal cards) or west gate guard station (for temporary cards) by your leaving.

Working jackets

You are requested to wear a working jacket while you work in the radiation-controlled area (experimental rooms in the basement). You can borrow it either from CNS or RIKEN, but please do not fail to return it to the proper location on your leaving.

CNS: The jackets are in the post box/stationary room in front of the secretaries' room on the second floor of the CNS building. Record your name on the notebook (ask some local member to find it), and return the jacket to a secretary after use.

RIKEN: You can borrow one at the entrance of the radiation-controlled area, and the return box is also nearby. RIKEN has more large-sized jackets.

Please do not write your name on the borrowed jacket!

Usage of computer network

For using the network in CNS/RIKEN, you need to observe the local network rules.

  • As for CNS visitors, we recommend you to use the CNS/U-Tokyo network, available in CNS building, and also in experimental rooms such as J1, and E7 (CRIB).

  • Please make sure your PC is not using any P2P-type software. Such software is often used for illegal file sharing, and connection to your PC is always be monitored. If a P2P connection is detected, they may prohibit your PC to be connected to the network of RIKEN/CNS. An explanation will be required even if the usage of the P2P is not illegal. Some of anti-virus software uses P2P for updating the pattern, which is an example of non-illegal usage.

  • The wired network of CNS allows connections only from devices with a registered MAC address. As for Wifi, eduroam is available in the CNS building, and a temporary certificate can be issued by CNS staff, if you don't have an eduroam account. Please ask us for details. The RIKEN network is independent from CNS network, and has another rule.

Cafeteria

From Apr. 2026, the payment at the cafeteria can be made with a "public-transportation-type" IC card (SUICA, PASMO, ICOCA, etc. ), a credit card (visa, master, etc.) or some QR-code payment method.

You can buy a public-transportation-type IC card at a railway (JR, Tokyo Metro and others) station, but not at RIKEN. However, the charge (depositing money on the IC card) machine at the cafeteria has been removed, and you should charge the card at the vending machine at railway stations, convenience stores, or somewhere. (Mobile Suica is chargeable on the phone, and not the case.)
