Mr. Shutaro Hanai, a graduate student in CNS (2nd year in doctor course), gave a poster presentation and a short presentation in a international symposium NUSPEQ2023. He received an ANPha Award, which is given to an outstanding presentation by a young scientist. The title of her poster was “Direct mass measurement of neutron-deficient Fe isotopes”.

Ms. Akane Sakaue, a teaching assistant at CNS, gave a poster presentation at the annual meeting of the A3 (Japan-China-Korea, JSPS/NRF/NSFC) Foresight Program “Nuclear Physics in the 21st Century”. She received an ANPha Award, which is given to an outstanding presentation by a young scientist. The title of her poster was “The search for double Gamow-Teller giant resonance at RIBF BigRIPS”.

A paper from CRIB facility titled “α-resonance structure in 11C studied via resonant scattering of 7Be+α and with the 7Be(α,p) reaction” was selected as one of the “50th Anniversary Milestones of Physical Review C”. The collection includes 37 papers published in Physical Review C in the last 50 years, and the papers “remain central to developments in the field of nuclear physics” and “announce major discoveries or open up new avenues of research”.

Dr. Javier Menéndez receives Zdzisław Szymański Prize

Dr. Javier Menéndez from the Center for Nuclear Study* received Zdzisław Szymański Prize for the year 2019.

The Prize has been awarded to the Laureate “for outstanding contributions to theoretical studies of nuclear structure, in particular for profound insights relevant to the search for neutrino-less double beta decay and the detection of dark matter.“
According to the Prize Regulations, the Prize consists of a certificate citing the contributions made by the Laureate and of a honorarium for the lecture delivered by the Laureate.
This Prize is awarded every second year to one individual for outstanding accomplishments in the area of theoretical or experimental studies of the properties of atomic nuclei. The Prize is awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Physics of the Warsaw University, based on the recommendations of the Selection Committee (chair = Prof. Marek Pfützner) of the Prize.

The award ceremony was held in a session of the 36th Mazurian Lakes Conference on Physics in Poland on Sep. 7.

Prof. Susumu Shimoura of CNS (with Prof. Sakurai) got a 21st century invention award.

Dr. Yusuke Tsunoda from the Center for Nuclear Study received FAIR GENCO Award 2018 for young scientists. Dr. Tsunoda had received the 11th Young Scientist Award of The Physical Society of Japan in 2017.

This year, Dr. Yusuke Tsunoda from the Center for Nuclear Study at the University of Tokyo received the FAIR GENCO Award for young scientists. The award is sponsored by the FAIR-GSI Exotic Nuclei Community (GENCO) and endowed with 1,000 Euro. The bestowal by GENCO president Professor Dr. Christoph Scheidenberger and vice-president Professor Dr. Nasser Kalantar-Nayestanaki took place on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in a special colloquium in the framework of the yearly GENCO meeting at FAIR and GSI. Every year, the FAIR-GSI Exotic Nuclei Community (GENCO) presents its Young Scientist Award to a young researcher at the beginning of their scientific career. The international GENCO jury, composed of seven renowned nuclear scientists, elects the winner in a competitive procedure, where several candidates, working in theory or experiment, are evaluated.

Dr. Yusuke Tsunoda receives the Young Scientist Award for the invention of the so-called T-Plot method. This visualization method is the key for understanding and grasping the essence of complex many-body quantum systems like atomic nuclei. He developed this method to display mathematical solutions that can be assigned to different states and shapes of atomic nuclei. It helps to interpret and understand experimental results and is becoming a standard method in the study of the structure of exotic nuclei. The T-Plot method attracts great attention in the scientific community worldwide.

The T-plot method is a powerful method for grasping the essence of complex multi-body quantum systems like atomic nuclei. When Dr. Tsunoda was a graduate student at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Science, he proposed the T-plot method and succeeded in assigning the results of nuclear structure calculation by Monte Carlo shell model to different states and shapes of atomic nuclei.
